MIDDLETON - Albert Theodore Goldstein, born in Sioux City Iowa on August 17, 1924, died January 17, 2017, at home surrounded by loved ones. A great businessman, volunteer, family-man, friend and all around great guy, Al never met a stranger, and everyone was better off from knowing him.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota and serving in the Marines, Al became a life long resident of Madison in 1946. Known as "Mr. G" of Carmen's (the "coat store of Madison"), together with his late wife Sherry, he ran Carmen's, womens clothing stores in Madison, downtown, Hilldale, and Sun Prairie. Legions of women wore their Carmen's coats, wedding dresses and other outfits with pride. A major booster of Downtown Madison, Monona Terrace and the Madison Chamber of Commerce.
Al was always thankful he could be on the 'giving rather than the receiving end' of life. As hard as he worked, he always found time to volunteer, never able to say no. Organizations benefitting from his tireless energy included Temple Beth El, where he served as President, UWCCC, Jewish Federation of Madison, Ronald McDonald House, Senior Core of Retired Executives (SCORE), Pleasant Branch Conservancy, Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, and many other worthy causes. Al was very good at convincing people to part with their money for good causes and was a major fund raiser for numerous organizations. And, if not working or volunteering, he could be found on the tennis courts or cheering for the Wisconsin teams.
Al's proudest achievement was his family. Married to Sherry for over 50 years, until her death in 2002, he was the proud father of Debra Goldstein and Karen Walker, and her husband Darwin, and the extremely proud Grampa of Lottie Walker and Joshua Walker, and his wife Anna. Al was so fortunate to find love a second time in life with Phyllis Lefcowitz, sharing the last 13 years together. With Phyllis, his family grew to include her family: Dale Kaufman and Greg Sessler, Tommy and Dvorah Kaufman and Marc Kaufman and Bill Healey.
The family will be forever grateful to the wonderful caregivers of Sr. Helpers (you know who you are) and the nurses and social workers of Agrace Hospice, enabling Al to live his last few years in the comfort of his home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity or one of Al's would be appreciated: Agrace Hospice, Temple Beth El Goldstein Education Fund, or the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., this Friday, Jan. 20, 2017 at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison, WI. Internment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
