The Reverend Alfred Paul Burkert

Alfred Paul Burkert, age 85, died April 16 of heart disease at Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, surrounded by his family. Fr. Al was a priest of the Episcopal Church who served God and His people for 58 years in twelve congregations in the Episcopal dioceses of Long Island, New Jersey, Kentucky, Eau Claire, West Missouri, and Milwaukee. He was also a chaplain for the Seamen's Church Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. and the VA Hospital in Madison.
Alfred was born on July 3, 1929 in the Bronx, New York, to Alfred Jacob and Olive Alner Burkert. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from Upsala College in East Orange, N.J. in 1953 and his Master's of Divinity from Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin in 1956.

Fr. Al is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 58 years Irene (Schanbacher), two adult daughters, Monica Burkert-Brist (Steven), and Melissa Zuhlke (Terry), grandchildren Catherine and Steven Benjamin Brist, Miranda and Matthew Zuhlke, niece Angela Waterman, nephew Michael Burkert and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William and sister Marguerite, and an infant grandson George Alfred Brist.

Visitation will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent Street, Madison, commencing at 5 pm on Friday, April 24, with a short prayer service at 7:30 p.m. A celebratory Eucharist and burial will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Chapel of Nashotah House Theological Seminary, 2777 Mission Road, Nashotah, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nashotah House for the education of men and women called to priesthood in the Episcopal Church.
