Johnson, Alice
Stoughton- Alice P. Johnson, age 92, passed away at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg on Thursday, August 30, 2012. She was born in Stoughton on March 15, 1920, a daughter of Albert Palmer and Betsey Tomina (Halverson) Anderson. She graduated from Edgerton High School. On September 27, 1941, she was united in marriage to Willard 'Bubbles' Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her 3 siblings, Alvin, Palmer and Eunice. She is survived by her daughters, Carole (Gary) Urbauer, Deborah Johnson-Peabody, and Michele (Richard) Dittman; son, Lann Johnson; grandchildren, Chris (Doris) Johnson, Mark (Cindy) Urbauer, Jennifer (Jeremy) Urbauer-Parsons, Matthew Johnson and Sara (Brian) Stensaas; great grandchildren, Justina, Jonathan, Tyler, Deven, Zavier and Paige; and by many nieces and nephews.
As an Air Force wife, Alice moved her growing family from coast to coast until settling in Stoughton in 1955. She worked for AT&T as a switchboard operator until the advent of 'dial' phones in the early 60's and in patient care and the Admissions Office of the Stoughton Hospital until her retirement. Alice was member of Covenant Lutheran Church, its Joy Circle and the VFW Auxiliary, as well as for 40 years, the Stoughton Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a "buyer' for many years.
Alice's coffee pot was always full for impromptu visits from neighbors and friends, and she enjoyed the very real honor of being "Ma" and "Grandma" to all her children's and grandchildren's friends. Her kindness, grace and compassion were evident as she sought the best in others and made a place for them in her heart. Her love for her family gave her a strength that will be remembered with a smile always, even as it is sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton, with the Rev. George Carlson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Stoughton. The family will greet friends at the Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday, and again at church on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Mnuk and the wonderful staff of the Cardiac Unit at St. Mary's Hospital and the equally wonderful staff at Agrace Hospice for their extraordinary care and compassion for Alice and the family. Alice passed peacefully surrounded by her family thanks to your efforts. A special thank you to the Stoughton Police, EMTs and the Emergency Room staff at Stoughton Hospital.
