Alice E. Schulthess

November 2, 1919 — January 4, 2010

Madison - Alice E Schulthess,(nee Cashel), age 90, passed away Monday, January 4, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. She was born November 2, 1919 in Minneapolis, daughter of Morris and Francis Cashel. Her family moved to Madison where she attended Blessed Sacrament grade school, West High School, and was a 1941 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. After graduation she moved to Chicago where she met Harry. They were married January 29, 1944. The couple lived in Elizabethtown Ky. for a brief time until Harry was sent over seas during World War II. Alice returned to Madison where Harry joined her after the War and they stayed to raise their family.

Alice was very active with volunteer work, PTA, and scouts. She volunteered for St. Mary's auxiliary, Blessed Sacrament Church, St Thomas Aquinas Church, and the Red Cross. She was especially proud that had she donated several gallons of blood up until her mid 80's. She continued to volunteer up until a few months before her death. She was also an avid bridge player, playing in several clubs with some of the same women she had known most of her life. In addition she was a ward secretary on the psychiatric

ward at the Veteran's Hospital. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Schulthess, a grandson, Mikel L Schulthess, her two brothers, Maurice and Robert Cashel and a sister, Margaret Cashel. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her 2 sons, James (Mary) Schulthess from Omaha, Nebraska and John (Donna) Schulthess from Cincinnati, Ohio.  She also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kim) Schulthess, Daniel (Leisha) Schulthess, Heidi ( Jeff) Siena and Kevin Schulthess, and 6 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Dr., Madison, WI 53717. A visitation at the church will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:30 AM. There will be a luncheon served following mass. Memorials can be made to St Thomas Aquinas Church or The American Red Cross, Dane County Chapter, P.O. Box 5905, Madison, WI 53705.
