MADISON -- Alta V. Hoffman, age 96, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Pine View Living home after a brief illness. Â Â Alta was born on March 16, 1914, in Madison, to Leslie and Mabel (Disrud) Sawyer. Â She attended UW-Madison for two years after graduating from Madison East High School in 1932. Â In 1936 she graduated from Madison Business College. Â After graduation she worked for many years as a switch board operator at Oscar Meyer in Madison. Â She married Arvid W. Hoffman on October 6, 1939, at Bethel Lutheran Church. Â She and Arvid owned and managed Hoffman Salt Sales from 1962 until they retired in 1986. Â Â Alta enjoyed caring for her family. Â She was a faithful member of Luther Memorial Church where she was active in the ladies Dorcas group. Â She enjoyed knitting and reading. She loved Madison and lived her entire life there. Â Â She is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Lowell) Corwin of Waukesha; her son, James (Carol) of Palmyra; two grandchildren, Sean (Chris) Corwin of Erie, Colo., and Kim Hoffman of North Prairie; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kyle Corwin of Erie, Colorado. Â Alta was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Â Â Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Â A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Â Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Â Â The family would like to express their deep gratitude and thanks to the staff at Pine View Living for their loving care and kindness given to Alta in her new home.
