Alvin C. Smith

McFarland- Alvin C. Smith, age 94, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg.  He was born in Dixon, Nebraska on October 14, 1914, the son of Harry and Minnie ( Bergen) Smith.  Alvin spent his youth in the Sparta/Cataract area with his mother, brother and sister.  On October 19, 1935 Alvin married Erna Johnson.  He worked for Carl Behrend as a sheet metal worker until his retirement.  Alvin was a member of McFarland Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed woodworking, clock making and baseball.  Alvin is survived by three children, Kathleen (Lilburn) Park of Lakeview, AR, Janet (Duane) Koch of Lake Jackson, TX and Farrel (Candy) Smith of McFarland; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Harper, Kay Johnson, Marsha (Jakob) Klopfer, Debbie (James) Knox, Stewart (Kristin) Koch, Scott (Pam) Smith and Andy Smith; 11 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Quinn of Lodi; and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erna, in March 2002; son, Harlan; grandson, Donald Brietzman; and brother, Wayne.  Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home, 5801 Highway 51, McFarland.  Burial will follow in Upper McFarland Cemetery.  Friends may greet the family from 12 noon until the time of service Tuesday.  A special thanks to the staff and friends of Angelus Assisted Living in Cottage Grove.
