Andrea Kay Mortenson

November 6, 1948 — March 11, 2025

Iron River

Andrea “Andy” K. Mortenson, 76, of Iron River, died peacefully on March 11th, 2025 at St. Mary’s Hospital after a loving weekend spent with her family.

Andy was born in Superior on Nov. 6th, 1948, the daughter of Robert and Ruth (Larson) Wiberg. She graduated from Superior Senior High School with the class of 1966 and furthered her education at UW-Superior.

Andy married the love of her life, Martin “Mickey” Mortenson on June 28th, 1969. Andy and Mickey celebrated 30 wonderful years of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 31st, 1999. They created many great memories over the years with the most beloved times spent raising their children, daughter Christy and son Curt. In addition to the camping trips, game nights, and attending their children’s sporting events, Andy also enjoyed baiting bear with her son Curt and niece Teresa, trying new recipes with whatever wild game or fish that Curt and Mickey brought home, gardening and picking whatever berry was in season to be sure pies could be made year round. She always made sure the holidays were an extra special time for her family.

After staying home with the children until they entered school, Andy held several jobs over the years including time spent at the Wisconsin Cheeseman, McKay Nursery and the VA Hospital in Superior until her retirement. She enjoyed traveling with her special group of friends that had remained close since high school, taking trips across the country from Oregon to Georgia to South Carolina.

She was adored by her grandchildren, whom she absolutely treasured. Grandma Mortenson loved when they would visit her at her house on the lake and would take them swimming, tell stories around the campfire and of course always have a stocked supply of all the necessary ingredients for s’mores. She made the best peanut butter pancakes and fudge, but perhaps her favorite time was making cut out cookies and sitting around the table decorating them enjoying their company. She was so proud of and greatly enjoyed watching her granddaughters Madeline, Claire and Brooke play volleyball, and it was well known she was not to be disturbed when their games were on TV.

Andy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mickey, son Evan in infancy and grandson Hunter. Hunter always held a most precious spot in her heart as he was her first grandchild and the first to show her the unmatched joy of becoming a Grandma.

She is survived by her children, Christy (Brad) Mosher of Waterloo and Curt (Missy) Mortenson of Iron River; brother Bob Wiberg of Las Vegas; grandchildren Madeline (Luke) Anderson, Claire (fiance’ Zach Bauer) Mosher and Brooke Mosher; step grandchildren Haley (Austin) Johnson, Carly Stouffer and Logan Stouffer; step great-grandchildren Ethan, Henry and Roger; her cat Munchkin; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A celebration of Andy’s life will be held at a cookout/picnic to be held this summer with details still being planned. She was a true gem and will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
