MADISON- Andrea Jennifer Stein (ne Zoll) was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 26, 1964. She died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 29, 2013, in Madison, Wisconsin, of a massive upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage from unsuspected medical disease.
Andrea grew up immersed in the love of family and friends from Congregation B'nai Yehuda in Homewood, Illinois, the Northern Federation of Temple Youth, and Camp Olin Sang Ruby Institute. Andrea graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. She pursued and completed a dual Master's Degree program in Social Work, from Washington University in St. Louis, and in Jewish Communal Services, from Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. She met her husband Jim while working as a medical social worker at the University of Chicago Medical Center. After dating for 4 months, they became engaged and got married on May 3, 1992. She had Hannah in 1995, moved to Madison in 1996, and had Jacob in 1997. Andrea immersed herself in the Jewish community of Madison. In 2001 she was awarded the Madison Jewish Community Council Miriam Singer Sulman Young Leadership Award and became Advertising Manager of the Madison Jewish News for the Jewish Federation of Madison. She became Managing Editor in 2012.
Andrea's greatest joy, however, was being a parent and wife. Her goal was to raise happy, sensitive and empathic children with a strong Jewish identity, ones who were accepting, liberal, and kind - as she was. Andrea brought joy everywhere she went. She was funny, clever, positive, and always knew the right thing to say. She was beautiful, but tasteful and modest. She devoted her life to helping people. She loved her little Havanese dogs, Shayna and Tyra, and regularly visited Hospice patients through Dogs on Call. She constantly made rhyming poems and songs that entertained her family. Andrea loved Israel and speaking Hebrew. She believed in G-d and heaven. Her acceptance of Jewish spirituality gave her great peace and comfort. Her joy and love hovered over her home and her loss is devastating. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Jim Stein, her loving children, Hannah and Jacob Stein, her mother, Roberta Nussbaum, her mother's husband Henry Nussbaum, her father Harvey Zoll, brother Adam Zoll (all of Chicago), mother-in-law and father-in-law Dee and Ken Stein (Milwaukee), as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Beit Olamim Jewish Cemetery in Sunset Memory Gardens in Madison, Wis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to the Jewish Federation of Madison, Chabad of Madison, or Dogs on Call. May her memory be a blessing.
