Anne Dewitt

Anne Ross DeWitt died July 25, 2016 at home with the aid of Hospice shortly after a severe stroke. She was born at Whitewater, WI, June 12, 1924 to Alta and Otto Reetz. She grew up in Shawano, WI along with her two sisters, Mary and Virginia, where her father was superintendent of schools and mother was a math teacher.
Mom was a Delta Gamma girl and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1946. She was a favorite of her house mother, Mable DeWitt, who made a point of introducing her to a young returning war hero and lawyer, Jack DeWitt. They married at Shawano Aug. 24, 1946 and lived in Madison where Jack taught and practiced law and Anne made a wonderful home to 5 children, T. Michael, John, Sandy, Maureen and Lizbeth. They moved to Mt. Horeb in 1965 where mom made many dear friends, sat for a few terms as municipal judge, served two terms as County Supervisor and opened a craft resale shop with her friends called "Country Crafts." Mom loved arts and crafts and made many paintings, lots of custom jewelry, collages, etc. She was never without a project. Even in her last days she was still haunting the local hobby shops and finished, according to my sister, 16 paintings in her last 6 months.
In her last years she moved to Tucson and was assisted by daughter Beth and after a few years, longing for Wisconsin's seasons, moved into an independent living facility in Waukesha where she was looked in on regularly by daughter Maureen. She retained her sharp wit and sense of humor and deep regard for current political issues right up to the end. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at home shortly after a massive stroke.
Anne was preceded in death by husband Jack, mother and father and both sisters. She is survived by her 5 children and 6 grandchildren, Justin, Kristen, Robin and Ryan by son John, and Anne and Emily by daughter Beth and husband Bruce McHale, Bellingham, WA.
There will be no visitation. Contribution in her name may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Institute.
