On Thursday, September 17, 2020, Anthony Myungkyu Chung, a beloved son, compassionate friend, and dedicated student, passed away at the age of 22 in Madison, Wisconsin, following a tragic motor vehicle accident.
Anthony – Tony to his friends – was born in Madison on May 14, 1998 to Youmie Koh and Woohyun Chung. He was a National Merit Scholar, alumnus of James Madison Memorial High School, and a student at Georgetown University, where he majored in Government and Economics with a minor in Philosophy.
From an early age, Tony enthusiastically participated in a variety of sports, clubs, and hobbies. While his soccer, baseball, and tennis careers were short lived, he found more success in music as a young cellist and pianist, placing highly at state competitions in piano. In high school, Tony found a true passion for public policy and government. He graduated as a decorated member of the debate team, a leader in JMM’s chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, and a district-wide student representative to the Madison School Board.
Tony’s intellectual curiosity knew no bounds. Beyond simply being a good student who could learn and absorb vast quantities of class content, Tony also loved to mold and play with information of all sorts. When presented with a new insight, he preferred to savor it and consider how it impacted his previous worldview, before filing it away for future reference. He loved to engage in conversation about myriad topics – from current events to cooking – with anyone who was willing to listen, be it a close companion or a riveted stranger. As he honed his skills, he unconsciously and then deliberately pursued a path towards social justice. His vast, encyclopedic knowledge and charismatic desire to communicate pushed him to passionately promote equity, fight for justice, and defend what he knew to be true. Those lucky enough to be close to Tony will remember him as the life of any room he walked into. His quick smile and frequent laughter charmed everyone he met.
He is also survived by his mother and father; grandfathers, Chung, Chang Young and Koh, Il Nam; grandmothers, Woo, Chang Hee and Chung, Ok Chul; uncles, Chung, In Hyun and Ahn, Soo Hoon; aunts, Kim, Myung Sook, Koh, Mira and Koh, Jumi; cousins Chung, Yun Seo and Junie Ahn; and longtime partner, Rory Demick, who loved Tony with all her heart. The Demick family mourns the loss of Tony’s bright future.
