Anthony Matkom

MADISON
Anthony J. "Tony" Matkom, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at age 92.
Tony was born in Zagreb, Croatia on May 5, 1925 to the late Ivan and Margareta (Beritic) Matkovic. He attended the University of Zagreb and received a Master's Degree from the University of Toronto. Later in 1962, he received his PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University and began working at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison. For a number of years, Tony worked at Madison General as the Director of Alcoholism Treatment and Rehabilitation. He was in private practice for many years and also worked as a consultant for Social Security Disability.

On December 30, 1965, Tony married Elizabeth Grafft in Evanston, IL. Tony enjoyed chess, gardening and ping pong with family and friends.
He is deeply missed by his beloved family, his wife of 51 years, Libby; son Edward "Ted" (Elizabeth); granddaughter, Katherine, Caroline, Clare and Ann; sister-in-law, Eugenia Lavery; and nieces, Diana, Lydia, Kristina and Michele. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Vlado Matkovich, and sister Dragana Bedenikovic.

Tony's family extends a special thank you to Dr. Roy A. Jhagroo of the University Health, Fitchburg Kidney Clinic and staff, Agrace HospiceCare and the Oakwood staff.

A memorial service will be held at Oakwood Village, University Woods at Resurrection Chapel, 6201 Mineral Point Rd in Madison at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 with Chaplain Martha Nack officiating. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oakwood Foundation, Inc., 6209 Mineral Point Road, Madison, WI 53705.
