Stoughton - Arthur Spanjar, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Meriter Hospital. He was born September 28, 1936 in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Arthur immigrated to America in December 1959. He was a Madison resident until moving to the Town of Dunn in 1990. Arthur was known to many as the man who took care of many bicyclists' needs as he was the first to import foreign bicycles in downtown Madison in the 1960's. After closing his Campus Bicycle Shop in the early 1970's, Arthur focused on his avid collecting drive in many subjects, including early transportation, steam, gasoline, mechanical pieces, and early toys.
Arthur met Candice in 1981 and married in 1993. Arthur and Candy enjoyed many travels and adventures together in the U.S. and Europe.
Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Candice (Capacio) Spanjar; sister-in-law, Deanna Spanjar of Mequon; nephews, David Spanjar of Germantown, Michael (Melissa) Spanjar of Glendale, Deborah (Rick) Intravaia of Sheboygan; and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Sophie Spanjar; infant sister, Sonya; and brother, Koert Spanjar. In addition to family, there are many precious friends around the world.
A Graveside Service will be held TODAY at 12 Noon on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Town of Dunn Burying Grounds, on the corner of Sand Hill Road and Highway B. A visitation with luncheon will follow the burial from 1:30-4:00 p.m. at the Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Carbone Cancer Center, 600 Highland Ave, K4/658, Madison, WI 53792-6164; Alzheimer's & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, 3330 University Ave. #330, Madison, WI 53705; or a charity of your choice.
