Barbara Brown

May 12, 1924 — September 27, 2016

MIDDLETON-Barbara (Bobbie) Illingworth Brown died on September 27, 2016 in Madison Wisconsin after a short illness. Bobbie was born in Hartford CT on May 12, 1924 to Stanley and Dorothy Illingworth. She graduated (summa cum laude) from Smith College in 1946 and received a PhD in Biochemistry from Yale University in 1950.
She moved to St. Louis and spent much of her well-respected career researching inherited metabolic diseases in the Washington University School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry. She married David Brown, also a professor in the biochemistry department, and they worked together in their lab for 38 years.
Following David's death after 59 years of marriage, Bobbie moved to Attic Angel Place in Madison. She enjoyed all of the activities offered and will be missed by many in the community. She had a special connection with her writing group and was an avid reader.
Bobbie is survived by her son Philip Brown (Kristine) and daughter Emily Tyler(Thomas). She also loved her three grandchildren Jason Brown (Elizabeth), Peter Brown (Abbey) and Karin Colby (Ryan). The joy of her life for the last three years has been her three great-grandsons, Grant, Grover and Ari Brown and she was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-granddaughter in October. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Vicki Baugh Brown and sister Dorothy Coyle. Her parents, sister, husband, and son (Christopher) predeceased her.
Memorial donations may be sent to either the Association for Glycogen Storage Diseases (AGSD) (PO Box 896 Durant Iowa 52747) or Attic Angel Place (8301 Old Sauk Road Middleton WI 53562)
No words can express our appreciation to the incredible staff at Attic Angels who lovingly cared for her during the last five years. We also would like to thank the staff of University Hospital who gently and skillfully cared for her during her final stay.
A memorial service will be held at Attic Angel Place (8301 Old Sauk Road Middleton) on Friday, October 14 at 2:00 PM.
