Barbara S. Spennetta

November 2, 1942 — January 12, 2011

Madison -- Barbara S. Spennetta, age 68 of Madison, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. Barb was born in Buffalo New York on November 2, 1942 to Addison and Muriel (Smith) Sommer (Gallisdorfer). She spent her childhood in North Tonawanda New York, where she was one of the youngest women to swim across the Niagara River. She moved to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Majoring in Education. After a couple of detours to get married and begin a family, Barb completed her degree, and then went on to work for the university, as a Lab Technician, and Manager of the Genetics Research Lab. She made many contributions to genetics and animal sciences including creating the first pasturella-free rabbit colony. She loved gardening, especially trying to get her roses to grow. She loved golf and softball, but her true sports passion was discovered at 49, when she took her first scuba diving course. Barb loved the ocean so much she had to share, and so became one of the oldest women to become a Master Scuba Diver Trainer. She and her husband taught scuba for many years, sharing the precious wonder that is our planets reefs with any who would listen.

Barb was passionate about everything she did, sharing that joy and zest with all around her. She believed in doing what was right, even if she had to stand up against the whole world. She saw the value in every life, and would provide whatever mommy comfort of pants kicking might be needed regardless of actual relationship. She was a shining light whose brilliance could be seen for miles around, her warmth touching and changing all she met. She is survived by her husband, Terry; daughter, Shari (Corey); sons, James and Joseph; brothers, Thomas Sommer and Jeff Gallisdorfer and sister, Patricia; as well as her grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
