Benton Taylor

Madison - Benton C. Taylor, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, after a brief illness.

Ben was born in Tucson, AZ on February 1, 1924, to Walter and Mary Fairchild Taylor. He married Mary Lou Amborn Taylor on June 30, 1951. He will be remembered for his compassion, humility, dedication, and sense of humor.

Ben earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and graduated from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison, WI and then joined the staff at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Medical School and became a full professor in 1971. He retired from active medical practice in 1990 and from the Medical School in 1994. Ben served for 6 months in the US Army (1942-1943) from which he received a medical discharge and served 2 years in the US Navy from 1956-1958.

Ben was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He was an avid reader, loved to garden, and enjoyed classical music and the theater. He was a fan of UW sports.

Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, and his siblings. He is survived by his children, David (Debbie) Taylor, Ann Taylor, Mary Kay Taylor, Gail (Jim) Davis, and Timothy (Shari) Taylor; grandchildren Matthew (Traci) Davis, Heidi (Al) Coppersmith, David (Christina) Taylor II, Allison (Matthew) Everson, and Lydia Taylor; and great-grandchildren Aiden and Anna Coppersmith.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 22, 2015, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent St., Madison, WI 53726.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, or to the "UW Foundation - Dr. Benton and Mary Taylor Great People Scholarship Fund" (for UW medical students) c/o UW Foundation, US Bank Lockbox 78807, Milwaukee, WI 53278.
