Bernard Francis Curwick, age 82, of Waunakee/ Westport, was called into God's arms on Sunday, August 21, 2011 where he passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family. Bud was born on September 12, 1928 to Leo and Mary (Baert) Curwick in Ghent, Minnesota. He attended St. Eloi School in Ghent and was baptized and confirmed into the Roman Catholic faith. He enlisted in the armed forces and served his country during the Korean War. After returning home, he followed his father into a career as an auto mechanic in the Marshall, Minn. area and later married Joan (Stassen) on August 25, 1951. Bud and his family moved to Wisconsin in the late sixties where he operated several auto parts businesses in Madison. Bud married Patricia Stalpes of Marshall, Minn. on Jan. 3, 2004 and they lived in Westport until his death. Bud was an avid pilot and loved to fly his Mooney single engine airplane cross-country where he and his sons and friends would attend the Indy 500. He enjoyed fishing at the cabin in northern Wisconsin, researching genealogy, and later in life, spending winters in Arizona with Pat and their friends. A dedicated father and grandfather, he could be seen cheering on his children and grandchildren at their athletic, academic and artistic events.Bud is survived by his loving wife, Pat; sons, Bob (Diane) of Waunakee, Doug (Judy) of Waunakee, Phil (Jan) of St. Francisville, LA, Tom (Mary) of Beaver Dam, Chuck (Mardel) of Beaver Dam; daughter, Susan (Brad) Madigan of Dane; stepchildren, Deb (Tom) MacDonald of Darien, CT, and Mike (Pam) Stalpes of Plymouth, Minn.; grandchildren, Scott, Craig (Hillary), Megan, Jeff (Laura), Kim, Kristin, Tara, Brandon, Jenny (Lawrence) Mersch, John, Ryan, Lauren Curwick, and Trevor, (Alicia), Tera, Tyler, Tony, and Taylor Madigan; siblings, Alverna DeRoode of St. Paul, Minn. , Marie Sullivan of Marshall, Minn., Edward (Joyce) of Bishop, CA, Kathleen Drown of Minneota, Minn., Le Roy (Kay) Curwick of Brooklyn Park, Minn.Virginis Steinfadt of Vinton, Iowa, Valerie (Tom) Jakob of Woodbury, Minn.; and more than 50 nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; his parents; sisters, Eileen Thanghe and Elizabeth Berckes; and one brother, Larry. A memorial service well be held on Wed Aug. 24, 2011 at 11:00a.m at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church 5460 Mary Lake Road in Westport. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. A celebration of Bud's life will be held at Rex's Innkeeper in Waunakee following the service at the church.
