With great sorrow, the family of Beryl Bentley-Anderson announces her unexpected passing. Beryl was living in Waunakee, WI following her retirement after nearly 30 years in service to our country as a Foreign Service Officer.
Beryl was the second of five children born to Barbara and Bedford Bentley in 1953. She was educated first in the public schools of Baltimore City, before attending Notre Dame Preparatory School. She matriculated at Johns Hopkins University, where she earned her B.A. in Social and Behavioral Sciences in 1975.
Beryl spent the early part of her career as a hospital laboratory technician at several Baltimore institutions before she was accepted by the U. S. Department of State in 1986. Her career would take her to many destinations, mainly in Africa. But her first posting was Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, at the end of the Duvalier regime. When the U.S. Embassy was under attack, and the compound was overrun, she helped guide people to safety. Years later she would be evacuated by U.S. Marines from the U.S. Embassy in Côte d'Ivoire during their first Civil War. She worked for the ONDCP under the Clinton Administration, and she was in New York on assignment to the United Nations during the 9/11 attacks. She also held posts in Senegal, Algeria, Mexico, Egypt, and Kenya.
Beryl is preceded in death by her sister, Brooke Lizanne Bentley, and is survived by her daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Daniel, grandchildren Tallulah and Jagger, siblings Bedford T. Bentley, Jr., Blaine T. Bentley and Benita L. Bentley, scores of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and a literal world of friends and acquaintances. She will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope for Haiti in her honor.
