Madison/Fitchburg -- Betty Jane Johnson, age 84 of Madison passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2009 surrounded by her family at the Fitchburg Hospice Center. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa on February 24, 1925, the daughter of the late Clara and Carl Papenthien. She met her husband, Allan R. Johnson while she was in nurses training in Cook County, Illinois and he in the Merchant Marines. They were married on January 30, 1947. They moved to Madison in 1957 and owned/operated Johnson's Seafood Center. She was a member of Midvale Community Lutheran church. She volunteered at the Fitchburg Senior Center for over 18 years and was a member of Crafty Crew. In her younger years she could be found with her granddaughter, Rebecca playing hours of Super Mario and other computer games. She loved to travel and had many pleasures traveling to Jamaica, Hawaii and the Bahamas with Marcia and Rebecca. Once she got into the computer age she spent many happy  hours emailing Becky, Wyatt, Chloe and Nicole. Being very independent you might find her driving down to Lake Mills to see Les, Carla and Nicole or packing a bag for the weekend and driving up to visit Linda and Jerry. She was always on the move and had quite the sense of humor. Right up to the end she could be found at Perkins on Saturday morning with Marcia eating cinnamon buns and drinking coffee. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Allan R. Johnson, her grandsons Cameron Eifert and Lindsey Sandmire and Jacob Johnson; her brother Richard Papenthien and sister Delores (Papenthien) Rupp. She is survived by her sister Gloria Papenthien of Dubuque, Iowa, her son Lindsey Johnson of Madison and three daughters, Linda (Jerry) Sandmire of Lyndon Station, Marcia (Johnson) Eifert of Cottage Grove, and Carla (Les) Tasker of Lake Mills. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, Rebecca(Andrew) Loniello, Toni Sandmire, Tambi Blicher, Nicole Tasker, Harlan Johnson, Wyatt Johnson and Chloe(Matt) McMichaels and one great grandchild Kaden McMichaels. Friends may call from 10:00am to 11:00am on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, WI. Services will follow at 11:00am with the Rev.
