Middleton, Bruce G. Borden, age 67, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012, peacefully at home with his life partner, Laurie Albrent, by his side. Bruce was born December 20th, 1944, in Culver City, California to Robert and Camilla (Swanson) Borden. He grew up in Watford City, North Dakota. Bruce's father was a game warden and he was very active in outdoor activities throughout his life. His interests were so numerous and varied, it was hard to keep up with him. He was involved with everything from Boy Scouts, inventing, tinkering, debate, philanthropy, manufacturing, genetics, homesteading and preparedness.
After suffering a spinal cord injury in 1981, Bruce became an advocate for the disabled. He spent years of his life dedicated to improving the lives of other disabled people all over the world. He started the Wheelchair Recycling Program, which distributed medical equipment to the disabled in third world countries and throughout the United States. Bruce was involved with advocacy work and served on numerous committees in Wisconsin to try to improve the welfare of disabled citizens. Bruce was given numerous awards for his work in these areas.
Bruce is survived by his children, Rob (Stella), Michael (Terri) and Bing (Bonnie); step-daughter, Kelly; his grandchildren, Chad, Alex, Abbey, Natasha, Madison, Zachary, Connor, Mason, and Sydney; his great grandson, Anthony; his sister, Anita; his step-brothers, Ronnie (Evelyn), Terry (Donna); his niece, Sheila; nephews, Jay (Laura), Tom (Shari), Lori (Jerrold), Loren, Cheryl (Brian), Ryan (Laurie) and ex-wife, Marcia.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his nephew Jeffery; his step-mother Olive; and a team of disabled pioneers that worked together advocating disabled rights that included Don Lindberg, Bill Lindemann, Joe Kutil, Royal Warrington, Dale Block, Fred Griesby, and Jerry Vogt.
Bruce's final wishes were to be cremated. To honor his life and his memory, a Memorial Celebration will be planned at a later time.
