Calvin L. Joyce of Sun Prairie, WI passed away peacefully at Unity Point Health Meriter hospital, surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 24th.
He was born on March 4th, 1945 in Indianapolis, IN. Although he moved extensively as a child, he eventually called Madison, WI his home, where he attended High School and later the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he earned a degree in English.
Calvin served his country in the United States Army, where he was part of the 101st Airborne division, a Green Beret, and reached the rank of Captain, before pursuing interests outside of the military while living in Germany.
At an Army base in Erlangen, Germany, he met Louise, who he was married to for 47 years. Together they traveled the world, explored the US, and eventually found time to raise two children, Joshua (Danielle Besaw Joyce ) and Michael along the way. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Bailey and Evangeline Joyce, who he talked about endlessly and loved to play board games with (he usually lost).
Calvin was a figure that was larger than life, quick with a joke and or funny story. He lived life to the fullest, always looking for the next adventure, new opportunity to explore, or something to place a wager on. He maintained his humor and quick wit until the very end, even making his doctors and family members laugh out loud during some of the most difficult end of life decisions.
He is further survived by his brother Donald (Diane Ray Joyce), sister-in-law Rita Baldwin Joyce, cousin Nelson ”Skip” Joyce, extensive nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Helen Van Riper Joyce and Edwin “Monty” Joyce, and brother Burton Joyce.
