Waunakee - Carl Richard Schaefer, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at his home in Waunakee. He was born on March 22, 1939 in Madison to Carl and Ruby (Rule) Schaefer. He graduated from Middleton High School in 1957 and served in the United States Navy from 1957-1961. Carl married Rita Griffiths on October 27, 1962 in Waunakee and they have resided there the past 51 years. He assisted his father in building Pleasant View Golf Course in Middleton, then worked for Warzyn Engineering and the State of Wisconsin. He retired in 1995 from the Department of Work Force Development, Division of Buildings and Safety, where he placed a strong emphasis on safety. Following retirement he spent many hours in his woodworking shop, where he made gifts and scrollsawing items for friends and family.
He enjoyed the trips to the family cabin in Phillips, and going to the hunting acreage near there and walking as well as riding the 4 wheeler. Carl was always ready for a game of cribbage, or starting a new jigsaw puzzle. He also enjoyed their winter trips to South Padre Island, Texas the past 10 years.
Survivors include his wife Rita; three sons Ronald of Green Bay, Randall (Monica Walsh) and his son Benjamin; Russell (Patti) and their children, Katie, Natalie and Ryan; one sister Kay (Bob) Kavanagh and a sister-in-law Doris Mikkonen.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee. Friends may call Saturday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
Full military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 360 Honors Unit. Carl's family, wishes to thank Dean Clinics doctors; Jill Holz, Susan Isensee, and David Ahrens, and staff for their care and concern. The family was also very appreciative of the care provided by the Waunakee Manor Staff.
