Carla Phillips

March 17, 1959 — July 7, 2012

Carla M. Phillips passed away peacefully at home in Nakoma on July 7th, 2012, age 53.

In addition to her loving husband, Bob Phillips, Carla is survived by two children, Robby and Nimi, ages 18 and 12 respectively; her mother, Alberta Jasberg of Palo Alto, CA; two older sisters, Hilda J. Friedman of Portola Valley, CA and Marta J. Jasberg of Pasadena, CA; and one younger brother, John A. Jasberg of San Francisco, CA.

Carla also will be dearly missed by Hilda's husband, Hal Friedman, as well as Bob's family: Vicki and Al Lettow of Sugar Grove, IL, Kathy and Jim Anderson of Cottage Grove, WI, and Lucille M. Phillips. Carla also had many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Carla was born in Palo Alto, CA on March 17, 1959 to John H. Jasberg and Mary Alberta Jasberg and spent her childhood in Palo Alto. A lover of music and physical activity, she earned a B.A. in Music from UC Santa Barbara in 1981 and a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology from San Jose State University in 1990. Carla and Bob were married in Saratoga, CA on July 19, 1987 and lived in San Jose, CA for over a decade. After moving from California to Madison with her family in 1998, Carla worked for 11 years as a Staff Reviewer for the UW-Madison Health Sciences Institutional Review Boards, conducting regulatory reviews for biomedical research. She was an invaluable member of the Health Sciences IRB office and will be deeply missed by all.

Carla had a wide circle of friends who supported her and her family throughout her five-year struggle with multiple myeloma. An advocate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, she participated in many walks and fund raising activities, raising substantial sums of money to fund research on various cancers.

Carla possessed an extraordinary passion for active pursuits including walking, running, swimming, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and yoga. Over the years she participated in countless races, including triathlons, often with Bob. She was an incredible cook and loved good food, particularly when she could share a great meal with family and friends. Carla was a voracious reader, eagerly consuming hard covers, paperbacks and most recently e-books, and loved to share her favorite books with her friends. She also loved all kinds of music and was a talented flutist.

Carla raised her children with enthusiasm and devotion, setting a high standard for them through her own love for learning. Her children are accomplished soccer players, and for several years she served as a team manager for both of their teams. To quote a fellow soccer parent, "We always enjoyed Carla's spirit on the sidelines of the '56er years. She always made us feel like we were all part of a big family raising those young boys. That spirit will live on in all of you forever."

Carla was a member of Namaste/Midwest I-child, an organization for families who have adopted children from India. She made many friends through her family's journey in adopting a beautiful daughter from India. Many Nasmaste families whose lives she touched will certainly remember her warmth, intelligence, and love. Along with her family, Carla intended to travel someday to Nimi's birthplace in Kerala, India.

The entire Phillips family is grateful for all of the support they have received over the years. Special thanks to Annette Roehre, Kim Handy, and Ina and Al Herlitzka for their loving care for during Carla's final days.
