Stoughton- Carlton Edward Overland, age 79, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at Skaalen Nursing Home. He was born in Stoughton on February 28, 1942 the son of Oscar and Lillian Overland. Carlton graduated from Stoughton High School in 1960 and from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 1964. He received his Masters degree in Art History from the UW Madison in 1965. On August 21, 1965 Carlton married Betty Urfer in Madison. He was an instructor in Art History at University of Northern Iowa from 1968-1970. Carlton was the curator of prints and drawings and a lecturer in the department of Art History at UW Madison. He served twice as the acting director of the Elvehjem Museum of Art (Chazen). Carlton traveled to Europe 17 times for research and Elvehjem exhibits, often accompanied by his family. He enjoyed travel, reading, and golf. Carlton had a phenomenal knowledge of history and a dry sense of humor. He was the ever consummate gentle man with a great love for his family. Carlton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty; son, Nathan Overland; daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Overland; beloved grandson, Vincent Overland; sister-in-law, Kathy Overland; nephew, Peter Overland; niece, Jennifer Montoya; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Pastor Clark Overland. A memorial to celebrate his life will be planned later. Memorials may be made to Skaalen Retirement Services, 400 N.
