Carol Ann Dellmann Andersen died peacefully on Friday, August 26, surrounded by her loving family.
Carol was born in Milwaukee on December 10, 1946, to Norman and Marguerite (Keehan) Dellmann. In 1968, Carol graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she studied English literature and education. She met her husband Phil at the University and together they lived in Connecticut, Ohio, and Indiana before returning to Madison in 2000.
Carol was always intellectually curious, reading widely and, in recent years, auditing classes at the U on art and world history. A keen appreciator of the natural world, she loved to observe the changing seasons, trees, plants, and birds. Carol took great joy in children; she taught middle school English for several years after graduation and volunteered in elementary schools for much of her life. The daughter of a band director, she played the flute and encouraged her children to play instruments.
Much of Carol’s life was shaped by her understanding of Catholic social justice and liberation theology movements. She believed in building community beyond her immediate family, while always supporting them.
She is loved and remembered by her husband of 54 years, Phillip Andersen; her sister, Mary Dellmann-Jenkins; her children, Michael (Katie Torrence Andersen), Kathleen (Jonathan Krieger), and Laura Andersen, and her grandchildren, Ryan, Benjamin, Thomas, and Mae.
Please join Carol’s family at a gathering to remember her on September 11, 2022, 4:30–8:00 p.m., at the large shelter at Hoyt Park, 3902 Regent Street, Madison, WI. For those who wish, donations in Carol’s memory can be made to Friends of the Arboretum ( http://arboretum.wisc.edu ) or Agrace Hospice ( http://agrace.org ).
We welcome you to share your thoughts and memories on the Carol's Tribute Wall.
