Madison -- Carol D. Betts, age 84, died on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born on August 19, 1925 to Richard and Viola (Crase) Dietzman in Platteville. Carol graduated from Livingston High School and went on to attend Madison Business College. Carol was united in marriage to George Franklin Betts in June of 1943, and he preceded her in death in 1992. Carol was a faculty secretary at the University of Wisconsin - School of Social Work, and was employed by different University departments for nearly 30 years before her retirement in 1988. She was a member of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Carol was one of the people originally involved in the development of the Deerfield Community Center. Her hobbies and personal interests are reading, writing, nature, and she loved to debate. Carol is survived by her eight children, Richard Betts of Oregon WI, Ronald (Christine) Betts of Morehead City, NC, David Betts of Avoca WI, Robert Betts (Nancy Oppliger-Betts) of Belleville WI, Sharon Betts of Orlean, VA, Cheryl (Saikou) Barrow of Monroe WI, John (Nancy) Betts of Avoca WI, and Raymond (Jenece) Betts of Janesville WI; her nine grandchildren, Shane Barth, Christine Swan, Shane Mattman, Jessica Offerdahl, Josh Post, Aaron Betts, Tricia Betts, Nathaniel Betts, and Ariana Betts; her great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Brittany, James, Franklin Jr., Jesse, Sean, Ally, Jason, Molly, Paige, Cayden, Olivia, and Rebecca; and her sisters, Anna (Charles) Adams of Wisconsin Rapids, and Mary Lou (Tom) Watterworth of Pigeon, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Betts; and a brother, Lyndale Dietzman. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October, 16, 2009 at GRACE INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH, 23 West Church Street, Evansville with Rev. Ronald E. Gay officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, and again at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the service at Highland Memory Gardens in Madison. Memorials can be made to the McBurney Center for use with dyslexia, on the UW -- Madison Campus, 1305 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706. We wish to thank the doctors and staff at 5-SW St. Mary's Hospital and the staff at HospiceCare Inc. for all that you did for Carol and her family.
