Carolyn Faye Borland

September 18, 1937 — November 18, 2009

Madison -- Carolyn Faye Borland, age 72, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at HospiceCare in Fitchburg, surrounded by her loving family. Carolyn was born September 18, 1937 in Maynard, Iowa to Glenn and Ruth Nicholson. She graduated from Maynard High School in 1956. She worked in Oelwein, Iowa until she married Glenn Borland on August 18, 1957. The couple moved to Madison where Glenn was a student and basketball player at the University of Wisconsin. While in high school, Carolyn was an outstanding basketball player, leading the Maynard team to the Iowa Girls State Championship in 1956. She was a unanimous choice to the all-tournament team and was selected the tournament MVP and team captain. She scored 3079 points in her high school career and was selected to all state teams 3 years in a row. She was inducted into the Iowa High School Girls Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971. More important than her athletic accomplishments was her great humility and her sincere concern for others, especially her loving husband of 52 years, Glenn, and her dedication to her 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren. She always put everyone else first and was famous for her made from scratch home-made pizza, her K-bars, and her peanut butter cookies. She was truly and outstanding cook and nobody could make a meal better than Grandma could. She truly enjoyed everything that went with being a Grandma -- especially cheering on her grandchildren at sporting events and supporting everything they were involved in. She worked at Sears West Towne for many years and was recognized as an outstanding sales associate. She truly enjoyed her two golf groups and her bowling group and treasured the friendships that developed. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn, and their children, Brad (Maureen) and their children, Amanda, Sarah, and Tyler; Brian (Char) and their children, Brianna, Alex, Brooke; and Elizabeth (Troy) Korth, and his children, Nathan, Brandon, and Jordan. She is also survived by her sisters and brother, LouAnn Kappmeyer, Betty Daniels, Glenda Thielbert, and Jim (Janice) Nicholson; and by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Ruth Nicholson; her in-laws, Glenn and Linda Borland; brother-in-law, Rollie Kappmeyer; and brother-in-law, Gene Thielbert. The family would like to thank the Dean Health Oncology staff for their caring treatment. A special thank you to the HospiceCare staff for providing wonderful care to Carolyn and peace to her family.
