MADISON- Cecelia Hiesiger, age 91, died August 8, 2009, at University Hospital of complications after a fall in her apartment. She will be deeply missed by her Madison and extended family and friends. Cecelia was the consummate New Yorker. She was born there, the daughter of Charles M. and Julia (Moskowitz) Hiesiger, was educated in the city's public schools, and after graduation from New York University she worked in the family real estate business for most of her career. She had a life long love of theater, music, dance and the visual arts; and she was able to partake of the bountiful cultural feast that her city provided. Her closest friends were people involved, on stage and behind the scenes, of the Broadway and off Broadway Theater. In the 1970's, Cecelia moved to Westchester County, NY, where she also had an antiques shop. In 1992, she moved to Madison to be closer to her sister Rhoda and her brother-in-law David Berman and their family. Her apartment walls were decorated with her collection of modern paintings and she was able to share the pleasure of attending performances at concerts and plays with her family. In 1998, the deterioration of her vision, caused by macular degeneration, led her to move to Capitol Lakes. She was able to maintain her independence in her own apartment with the assistance and loving care of her aides. Her family expresses their special thanks to her personal physician, Dr. Lorna Belsky, the medical and nursing staffs of University Hospital and Clinics and to Jewish Social Services. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Social Services, 6434 Enterprise Lane, Madison, WI 53719, or to charities of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the Premier Room at Capitol Lakes, 233 West Main Street, Madison.
