Christine Legreid Barnes

Madison -- Christine Legreid Barnes, age 94, died on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Oakwood Village West. She was born in Humbolt, Iowa on July 13, 1915, the elder daughter of Herman and Constance Legreid. Following education at the UW and Miss Groves Secretarial School, she married Robert H. Barnes on November 17, 1939, living her adult life in Madison. As homemaker, she raised their three children, was active in philanthropic work and was a longtime active member, of Bethel Lutheran Church. Her free time interests were cooking, reading, auditing UW classes, family, friends, outdoor activities, home and her Norwegian heritage associations, such as Gudrid. Christine was keenly interested in Historic Madison preservation. She and her husband traveled worldwide. Words that describe Christine are fashionable, warm hearted, sincere, and sociable. Her multifaceted interests included hiking, fashion, art, music, and other cultures. And a day was not complete without a cup of coffee. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia (William H.) Putnam of Madison, Constance (Stan) Fox of Mt. Horeb; son, David (Vicki Rabe) of Ridgeway; six grandchildren, William Putnam, Rachel (Ron) Olson, Seth (Elena) Barnes, Briana Barnes, Charlie and Winston Fox; seven great-grandchildren, Heidi, Josephine, Aidan, Justin, Jessica, Ella, and Lucy; and a cousin Dr. Mac Baskett of Livingston, MT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and sister, Constance Rockett; and cousin, Elaine Mueller. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at OAKWOOD VILLAGE WEST in the RESURRECTION CHAPEL, 6205 Mineral Point Road, Madison, with Pastor Gwen Brandfass officiating. Inurnment will precede the memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, 1 Speedway Road, Madison, meeting at the entrance. The family suggests any memorials be made in Christine's name to Bethel Lutheran Church Media Ministry, Bethel Horizons, or the Oakwood Foundation. The family would like to thank the staff at Oakwood for their loving care of Christine, and the thoughtful medical care of Dr. Ewalt and Dr. Gilliam.
