Clifford L. ""Buzz"" Drinkwine passed away at home Monday evening after an extended illness, surrounded by the comfort of his family. Â He was born in Superior, Wisconsin on September 2, 1935, where he spent the first 23 years of his life, including marrying Joanne Vandenberghe, on October 26, 1957. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years; children, Frank (Margaret) Drinkwine and Susan (Steve) Schmidt; grandchildren Bradley, Krista and Jason Schmidt, Patrick and Rieta Drinkwine; brother Edward (Mary Rose) Drinkwine and sisters Judith Boivin (Jim Kantner) and Mary Kay Snelling. Â He was preceded in death by his parents Ella and Clifford Drinkwine, brother Joseph, sister Gloria, and children Mary and Joseph. Cliff was a true ambassador of his Catholic faith that he exemplified in his daily life and as a lifelong member and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #4586 in Monona. Â He graduated from UW Superior with a degree in English and his teaching certificate. Â He worked as a Scout executive for Boy Scouts of America for 7 years, followed by a career in the insurance industry. Â He retired from American Family Insurance in 1996 after 28 years. Later in life Cliff developed a passion for woodcarving, and along with his wife they established Capital Carving Supplies. Â They traveled throughout the Midwest to carving shows, and he was instrumental in organizing the Capital Area Carvers of Wisconsin as well as supporting the establishment of many carving clubs. Â He considered each of his carvings to be ""a slice of life"" to be shared. Â And there was never a dull knife at home! Cliff was an inspirational teacher throughout his life, whether it was how to tie a knot to young Scouts, insurance courses at MATC, religious education, or woodcarving skills. Â He taught his most important life lessons to his children and grandchildren. You could not ask for a more dedicated, loving, caring, loyal and trusted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Â He and Joanne loved to travel, especially to see loved ones, always with God as their pilot. Cliff was more than grateful for all of the friendships he gained throughout his life, and he felt blessed for the care he received up through his final days Funeral services will be held on Sat. May 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St John's Catholic Church 209 South St. Waunakee, Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call at the church from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place in Highland Memory Gardens Cottage Grove.
