After a long and wonderful life, Catharine "Connie" Hampton Todd, age 98, passed away on January 25, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Forrest A. Todd, to whom she was married for 59 years.
Connie is survived by her four children: Michael (Deborah) of Chicago, IL; William (Jeanne Wallander) of Holly Springs, NC; Karen (Scott) Whitsitt of Naperville, IL; and Robert Kim (Kristin) of Madison. Also surviving Connie are her four grandchildren: Kimberley Whitsitt (Brian Lind); Ryan (Shelly) Whitsitt; Kelly Todd and Connor Todd. She was born on July 4, 1917, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, to Glen and Lois Hampton. She grew up with her two brothers, William and Glen Jr. An intelligent woman ahead of her time, Connie pursued her education at Hastings College and later attended graduate school at the University of Southern California. After college she taught English at Wolbach High School before she married Forrest on June 13, 1942. Forrest's Naval career took the couple to California, Maine, Washington, Maryland and Hawaii before they finally settled down in Madison to raise their four children.
In addition to being a caring mother and devoted homemaker, Connie lived an active life. During her college years, she was President of Theta Psi Beta and served with Ak-Sar-Ben, a philanthropic organization. While raising her four children, she actively participated in PEO, another philanthropic group that celebrates the advancement and education of women. Connie and Forrest traveled the world together, visiting such places as China, Japan, Turkey, Australia, several European countries and Panama. They were also longtime season ticket holders for UW football, basketball and hockey. Connie's lifelong hobbies included golf, bowling, cross-country skiing, biking, flower arranging and playing bridge. She thoroughly enjoyed doing the daily crossword and cryptoquote puzzles and always had time to play cards and board games with her grandchildren.
