Mayer, Jim (Cornelius James)

Age 93, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2022. He was born on September 28, 1928, in La Crosse, WI to Cornelius Henry Mayer and Harriet (Frey) Mayer. He graduated from West High School in Madison and joined the US Marine Corp. After honorable discharge from the Marines, he attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and married Betty Harms.

Jim and Betty lived in numerous Wisconsin communities including Madison, Viroqua, Racine, Warrens and La Crosse. Jim worked for Ray-O-Vac in Madison and in Raleigh-North Carolina, Philadelphia and Racine. Jim and Betty grew weary of moving with Ray-O-Vac and he left the company.  Jim took a job with Mosser Lee, in Milston, WI where he was “The Boss of the Moss”.

After the passing of his wife, Betty, Jim reconnected with his high school sweetheart Jacqueline “Dolly” Matthews, they married and Jim returned to Madison and again became a “Southsider”.

During his life he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and sharing favorite activities that included: traveling, grilling, duck hunting, skiing, golfing, boating, fishing, snowmobiling and vehicle repair. Jim and Betty owned a trailer at the Rock River Leisure Estate, in Milton, WI and enjoyed socializing with their neighbors there for many years.

He is survived by his brother Roger Mayer, daughter Susan Mayer both of Madison, and his son, Fred (Patricia) Mayer of Scottsdale, AZ. Also, grandsons Ryan (Jen) Mayer, Eric (Amanda) Mayer and great grandsons Kyle and Logan Mayer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, second wife Dolly, granddaughter Kristi Stockley and grandson Shawn Mayer.

A celebration of life will be held on June 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Cress Funeral Home: 6021 University Avenue, Middleton, WI 53700. Internment will at Roselawn Cemetery at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to: St. Marks Lutheran Church, 608 Spruce St. Madison, WI 53715.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the many wonderful care givers at The Waterford at Fitchburg. Also, we would like to thank his medical providers in the Dean- SSM Health system for their excellent care.
