Madison - Dr. Curtis R. Weatherhogg, M.D., 87, passed away peacefully at home with his wife Jan at his side on December 1, 2015. Dr. Weatherhogg was a pediatrician in Madison for 38 years from 1958 to 1996. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 14, 1928 to John and Laverne (Birdsall) Weatherhogg. He entered the U.S. Army as an 18-month volunteer in June 1946. Stationed in Japan, he served with the 25th Infantry Division Band. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1951 and from the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1955. He served an Internship at the University of Ohio at Columbus, Ohio and spent the next two years at Children's Hospital there in pediatric residency. After completing his residency, he joined Dr. Alexander Iams in private practice in Madison where he remained for the entirety of his career. He held various leadership roles at Madison General Hospital/Meriter Hospital and the Wisconsin State Medical Society where he served as the chairman of the State Medical Society on Pediatrics and was named Wisconsin Pediatrician of the Year in 1983 by the American Academy of Pediatrics. He played a significant role in the founding of the Physician's Plus Health Organization and gave tirelessly to multiple boards and community organizations. In addition to his work as a physician, he spent many years working on the Weatherhogg family genealogy. He loved to travel and also enjoyed golf, tennis, calligraphy, MSO and playing the trumpet in various local bands, including the Blessed Brass, All That Jazz Big Band, and Retro Swing Band. He served as an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church where he was a member and sang in the choir for many years. He has a multitude of good friends and caring patients who will remember him fondly. He married Margaret (Trimble) Weatherhogg in 1952, and after her death in 2004, he married Jan (Downing) Weatherhogg on December 4, 2010. Curt cherished his family and was devoted to them, sharing his love, sense of humor, medical advice, helpful wisdom, and encouragement to each and all. He is survived by his wife Jan Weatherhogg, his daughter Nancy (David) Yaniec of Charleston, SC and his two sons, Mark (Patricia) of Cedarburg, WI and John (Tracy) of Middletown Springs, VT, and his brother Neil (Janet) Weatherhogg of Topeka, KS, their two sons, Christopher and Jonathan, as his stepson Jamison Downing of Madison. He has eight grandchildren, Michelle and Leanne Weatherhogg, Caitlin and Bryan Yaniec, Kyle, Emma, and Tyler Weatherhogg and Kingston Downing. The family appreciates the kindness of friends, visiting professionals, helping organizations the VA Hospital and Agrace Hospice for their special care during his final illness.
A private graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 8 at Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 326 South Segoe Road, Madison, WI 35705.
