MADISON-Daniel G. Rider, Jr., beloved husband, father and brother, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was 69. Dan was born on July 23, 1938, in Boston, Mass, the son of Daniel and Muriel Rider. He spent his childhood in New England, then moved to Santa Ana, California where he graduated from Santa Ana High School. After earning his bachelor's degree from Stanford University, Dan received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1964, specializing in Harmonic Analysis and Fourier Series with Walter Rudin as his advisor. Dan was C.L.E Moore Instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Assistant Professor at Yale University and Professor of Mathematics with the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow. In 1970, he was invited to address the International Congress of Mathematics, in Nice, France. Dan served on the TA Evaluation Committee for the Math Department for 20 years and as TA Coordinator implemented many innovative programs. He was also on the University TAA Bargaining Team for several years. Most of all Dan enjoyed teaching. After nearly 40 years with the UW he retired in 2003 as Professor Emeritus. Running, traveling and spending time at his farm in Richland County gave Dan great pleasure. He also enjoyed classical music, reading, and Badger Hockey. Dan was an active member of First Baptist Church, Madison. Dan's family was his greatest pride and priority. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by Claire, his wife of 44 years; his children Catherine (Jeffrey) Phillips, Charles (Kristen) and Barbara (Jeb) Metric; and eight grandchildren, Helen, Rachel, Jacob, Madeline, Grace, Owen, Hannah and Henry. Dan is also survived by two sisters, Sally Cummings and Jane Cochell. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 14, 2008 from 4:00 to 6:30 pm at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road in Madison. His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:00 pm at First Baptist Church located at 518 N. Franklin Avenue in Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Madison or Mt. Zion Food Pantry, c/o Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Madison.
