Davia Cohn

January 19, 1928 — April 14, 2020

Davia Newmark Cohn, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. She had been suffering from series of illnesses for several months. She was preceded in death by her husband Jontel (Yonty) Cohn on March 9, 2007, to whom she was married for 57 years.

She is survived by her 3 children, Marilyn (Mark Hogseth), Martin (Karen), and Jill (Rick Hand); 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte (Mickey) Levitan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Jack Newmark; and her sister and brother-in-law, Rhoda and Marty Deblinger.  She is survived by many nieces, and nephews, and friends who loved her.

Davia was born on January 19, 1928 in Perth Amboy NJ where she graduated from Perth Amboy HS. She graduated from Newark State Teachers College (Now Kean University).  She taught school in East Brunswick before meeting Yonty, a WWII veteran, at a dance. They were  married December 25, 1949.  Davia and Yonty moved to East Brunswick in 1952, where they lived until 1986, and were active members of the Anshe Emeth Synagogue in South River. Davia was president of the Hadassah branch. They later moved to a retirement community in Monroe Twp, NJ. and ultimately moved to Monmouth Junction, NJ in 2001.  Sept 2019, Davia moved to Madison WI to an assisted living to live near her daughter Marilyn,. Davia enjoyed the Yahara River valley  and sunset view from her window, and the children playing in the school yard next door.

There will be a gathering of family and friends in the future, when we are all able to celebrate Davia’s life together.
