After college, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as an officer in Berlin, Germany, with the 3rd Brigade, 6th Infantry, from 1959 to 1961. Following his military service, he joined Rex Chainbelt Company, Milwaukee, WI, as a sales engineer with a specialty in aircraft bearings. During his long career with the company, he lived in Los Angeles, CA, and Downers Grove, IL, before settling in the Seattle, WA, area.
