Dominic Francis San Fillippo, Sr. entered heaven on August 5th, 2010 in Foley, Alabama. He was born on January 15th, 1918 in Waukesha, the son of the late Salvador and Marie (Armaro) San Fillippo of Salerno, Italy.
Dominic proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II where he was first introduced to his wife-to-be by becoming her pen pal, an introduction made possible by his brother Sam. After spending his last year as a Communication and Cryptographic Chief on the Island of Maui, Dominic moved to New Orleans, and married Ursula Fabert, his wife of 36 years, who preceded him in death in 1983.
Dominic and Ursula lived in New Orleans for several years before moving to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He was an avid outdoorsman who promoted responsible hunting, fishing and wildlife conservation. He worked as a Radio Technician for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries until his retirement in 1980.Â
He is survived by three sons and one daughter: Dominic San Fillippo, Jr., and his wife Pam of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; his son Paul San Fillippo and his wife Lynda of Hammond, La, and Drew Mitchell and her husband Andrew also of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; four grandchildren: Timothy, Michael and Amy San Fillippo of Hammond, and Drew Mitchell of Bay St. Louis; two surviving brothers, Salvadore Sam San Fillippo of Madison, Anthony ""Tony"" San Fillippo of Oconomowoc, and a sister, Mary San Fillippo also of Oconomowoc. He is further survived by a very close niece, Barbara Zaun of Phoenix, AZ.
Prior to Katrina, Dominic was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Post-Katrina, Dominic became a member of St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Foley, Ala., and also a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Dominic will be missed deeply. His family celebrated his life and passing at a visitation held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Cress Funeral Home is assisting the family locally.Â
