Donald Edward Schuh, age 57, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at his home in Madison, following a long illness and several years of declining health.
Don is survived by his sons Adam and Andrew, his father Donald L. Schuh, his sisters Ellen Schuh and Laurie (Jay) Kuether, his former wife Amy Shanks-Schuh, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Hailey and his mother Joyce Schuh.
Don was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison on January 28, 1967, and he was raised by his parents, Donald L. and Joyce (Schmidt) Schuh in the Sun Prairie area.
Don graduated from Sun Prairie Senior High, Class of 1985. Following high school, he attended UW Madison and Madison Area Technical College, while serving on the Blooming Grove, Maple Bluff, and Burke Emergency Medical Services.
Don was very proud of his career as a pediatric critical care nurse with several hospital systems in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia, Alabama, and Texas.
It was through his work that, one day, Don met an infant boy who needed a father. Don adopted Adam in August of 2000. In 2003, Don was married to Amy and became father also to Andrew and Hailey. Don was a very dedicated father who provided his children with many years of loving care. This was especially true for Adam and Hailey who each had profound special needs.
In addition to caring for his children, Don loved camping, photography, and classical music. He could (and often did) talk for hours about the many pipe organs that he travelled to see and hear around the country. He was a proud member of the Catholic parishes in each place that he lived.
Throughout his career, Don supported others through the trauma they were experiencing. And like many other healthcare professionals, he did not prioritize his own health along the way.
Private services will be held.
The family requests that no flowers or gifts are given. Instead, Don would ask you to support organizations specializing in caring for special needs children, such as Variety (The Children’s Charity of Wisconsin), or the healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to this critically important calling, such as Help for Health Care Professionals (HHCP).
The family extends their deepest gratitude for the love and support that relatives and friends have given Don and all of us over the years. We are especially thankful to Chuck W. for always being there with care and compassion.
