Dorothy Benson

Stoughton- Dorothy Benson, 93, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 in St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. Born October 18, 1921 in Stoughton, daughter of Harry and Delia Johnson. She married Harven Benson. After graduating from Stoughton High School, she attended Whitewater State College. She worked for her parents at the Johnson Dairy and in the cafeteria at Stoughton High School. Later in life she worked as a realtor with several agencies, including Rorge Realty and Munson Realty. Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Sons of Norway and of First Lutheran Church where she was active with the church circle. She volunteered for many years as an election judge and for the Syttende Mai celebrations. Living in the country was one of her passions. She was born on Hammond Road and continued to live on the same road her entire life. Some of her favorite things included shopping, traveling, gardening, watching the Green Bay Packers, and having a vodka cocktail. She enjoyed spending the past few winters with her sister, Myrt, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Dorothy was very dedicated to her entire family and spent years as a caregiver to many of them. There was nothing she loved more than visiting with her family. She is survived by her sons, Richard (Valerie) and James (Nancy) Benson, grandchildren, Rod, Jenny, Bret, and Cody Benson and Laura (Joe) Kunze, great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jon, and Taylor Benson and Devon Pettit, and a great-great-granddaughter, Gianna Golf, one sister, Myrtle Jordan, sister-in-law, Irene Rasmussen, brother-in-law, Earl Schiefelbein, sister-in-law, Barbara Collins, a special nephew, Wayne Culham, numerous nieces and nephews and very special friends, Lori Helley, Maxine Thompson, and Janis Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Harriet Culham, and brother, Norman Johnson. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at First Lutheran Church in Stoughton on March 21, 2015 at 2:30 with a visitation for an hour before the service. Private burial at Riverside Cemetery. Memorials can be made to First Lutheran Church or the Sons of Norway. Dorothy was a very special, compassionate, and cool lady, who will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
