Dorothy Bernd

October 5, 1926 — April 27, 2017

This is the story of Dorothy Helen Bernd. Dorothy was a wonderful woman that was loved and will always be cherished. Dorothy's story starts on October 5, 1926, in Hartford, WI. She was the only daughter of German immigrants, Tony and Bertha Rashke, who came to America through Ellis Island.

Dorothy was an avid sports fan, especially when she could get in the game. She often shared memories of her days playing for the Sparks softball team from Milwaukee, WI, in 1946.

In 1948, Dorothy married Cal Bernd and had two wonderful sons, Steve and Michael. Their family resided in Lake Geneva, WI. Each year, Dorothy and her family loved to go to Jensen Beach in Florida.

Dorothy loved to go to the movies, the theater, and rummage sales. She loved playing the penny slots in Vegas and even saw Elvis on the strip. She was renowned for playing a mean game of cards (especially bridge and cribbage), but not for her cooking skills. Dorothy loved to write poems and was published.

Dorothy's grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. Dorothy was also a mentor to Army Brown, who grew to become a very close friend.

Dorothy was proceeded in death by her parents, Tony and Bertha Rashke, and her son, Michael Bernd. Loved ones that will miss Dorothy are: her son, Steve Bernd, and daughter-in-law, Jan Bernd; her "perfect" grandson, Tom (Stacy) Bernd; her great grandchildren, Emily and Adam; and her daughter-in-law, Lois Bernd. She will also be greatly missed by many close friends who brought much laughter and joy to her life.
And so the story goes on, until we see our Grandma "Grammy" Dorothy again. We love you and will miss you.

The family would like to thank the workers and volunteers of Agrace Hospice Blue Team and Artisan Memory Care in Middleton who supported us and helped make Dorothy's final days comfortable. The family requests that any monetary memorials be sent directly to Agrace in Fitchburg, WI.

Please share your memories of Dorothy.
