Dorothy L Dahl, age 94, died in the early morning hours of Monday, February 14, 2022 at UW Hospital following complications from several strokes. She was born on January 5, 1928 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Alexander Garfield Sissons and Anna Marjorie (Galbraith) Sissons.
Dorothy was born and raised on the family farm in Portage la Prairie. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba. It was there that she met her husband, John C. Dahl. They were married on June 16, 1951. Upon Dr. Dahl earning his D.V.M. degree from the University of Minnesota, together they bought a solo veterinary practice in Clintonville, Wisc. Dorothy was the receptionist and lab tech in the early years. In 1971 the family moved to Madison when Dr. Dahl accepted a position with the Dairy Equipment Company. Since then, Dorothy called the greater Madison area home. Having raised four boys, she was a follower of Wisconsin sports, including the Badgers, Brewers, Packers and PGA Tour golf.
She is survived by her four sons; Christopher (Annette) Dahl of Bend, OR, Bruce Dahl, also of Bend, OR, Andrew (Beth) Dahl, of Fargo, ND and Glenn Dahl of Madison, WI; Laura Dahl; Diane Dahl; and eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. John C Dahl; her parents; her brother, Frank Sissons; two brothers in law and four sisters in law.
The family would like to thank the doctors of UW Health for the care of Dorothy over that past several years, including Dr. Alexis Eastman and Dr. Art Walaszek. The doctors and staff of University Hospital Neurosciences Progressive Care Unit for their compassionate care in Dorothy’s final days, including, but limited to, Dr. Erik Tarula, Dr. Joshua Medow, Dr. Eric Marty, Dr. Liana Eskola, Nurse Practitioner Randi Davis and Registered Nurses Megan P., Katie W., Emily B., and Jess B. The staff at Waunakee Manor Assisted Living Facility, where Dorothy called home the past 11 years. Again, including but not limited to, Social Worker Amanda Anderson and Nurse Selena Amundson.
The family would also like to thank Kit Thomsen and Susan Norby for the care, love, friendship and support they gave to Dorothy over the years.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd., Madison. Family will greet friends from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
The family suggests donations be made in Dorothy’s name to Windsor United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 187, 4434 Second Street, Windsor, WI 53598.
Our mom had a strong and calming faith, something we aspire to continue in her honor.
