Dorothy Mae Guppy

Dorothy Mae (Richardson) Guppy, age 92, of Sun Prairie, died on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center. She was born November 26, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse and Clara (Benson) Richardson. Dorothy graduated from Minneapolis West High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1936. She married William H. Guppy, April 20, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They divorced in 1970.

Dorothy lived in Sun Prairie since 1974 and was a member of the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church. She was a cheerful, optimistic person with a memorable smile, who loved to read and do crossword puzzles, and enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She had a lot of common sense and was a good listener. Dorothy loved to walk and kept fit that way. She also maintained a healthy diet with occasional splurges on ice cream or chocolate. She liked the four seasons of Wisconsin, was proud of her Irish heritage, and volunteered at the Food Pantry and at Westside Elementary School in Sun Prairie. Dorothy was a caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who provided love, support, and understanding to friends and family.

Survivors include a son, Tom Guppy, and a daughter, Susan (Doug) MacKenzie; five grandchildren, Marie Guppy, Ben Guppy, Kim Guppy, Matthew (Rhionnon) MacKenzie, and Jennifer (Matt) Cross; 3 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Morgan Cross, and Paige MacKenzie; and two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Paul Richardson, and her former husband.

A memorial service will be held at SUN PRAIRIE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 702 North Street, Sun Prairie, on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Susan Bresser officiating.

The family would like to thank the Sun Prairie Health Care Center staff for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church.
