Dr. Anthony Lamar Brown MADISON - Â ""O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come."" Psalm 65:2 Anthony Lamar Brown was the precious son entrusted to the love, nurturing and life stewardship of his parents, the late Ernest Raymond Brown and the late Vera Marcella Wilburn Brown. He was born in Milwaukee. Coming from a family of strong Christian convictions, Anthony confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. Anthony attended Milwaukee Public Schools and earned a high school diploma from Rufus King High School; graduated with an A.S. from Diablo Valley College in Concord, Calif.; B.A. in psychology and M.A. in educational guidance in counseling psychology from the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif.; and earned his Ph.D. in educational administration, higher education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Anthony married Brenda Glover in 1982 and to this union they were blessed with four beautiful children, Stephanie, Anthony II, Ashley and Aaron; and a wonderful niece, Brianna Roberts. Anthony was a loving and strong husband, father, brother, nephew, grandson, uncle, grandfather, godfather and friend. He was the founder of Madison's Pride Classic, an anti-drug education program that brought together more than 30 professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities to speak out against drug abuse. Anthony was known for his numerous volunteer activities in the general Madison area including: Urban League, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 100 Black Men, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute and numerous civic and community programs. He was very generous with his time and expertise in helping youth, children and his community. Anthony was an avid golfer enthusiast, Scrabble champ extraordinaire and loved playing practical jokes. During his illustrious career, Anthony held several prominent professional positions, having worked for NAACP under the leadership of the past president, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks in New York City; community relations administrator for Wisconsin Power and Light Company; assistant vice president of student affairs and executive assistant to the president at Grambling State University in Grambling, La.; he was the executive director of the Equal Opportunity Commission for the City of Madison and community relations officer with the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority. He was a person of strong conviction and commitment for justice, fairness and equality for all people. Brown became a member of the Madison Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated in the fall of 2007. He was named ""Kaptain Kourageous"" by Brother Joe Felder for the heroism he showed during his health battles. In 2009, Brown was voted into the position of vice-polemarch and became a vital force for the chapter's new membership. His goal for the fraternity was to reach out to the young generation of African American men and aid in the shaping of their development professionally and spiritually. His eldest son, Anthony Brown II and a member of the fraternity since 2004, motivated Brown to pursue the fraternity. The act of a son bringing a father into the fraternity is a unique one and this relationship gained the attention of the fraternity's national leadership. He had many friends, particularly lifelong friends from high school - the Ebonies, which consisted of his cousin Jonathan Overby, Otha Smith, Walter Smith and Milton Staples. For the past several years, Anthony had faced major health challenges having received two kidneys; one from his brother Dwayne Brown and one from Matthew Winston whom he considered his third brother. Anthony's sense of humor was contagious and he was not a complainer. He loved God and believed in the word of God. ""Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings."" Psalm 9:11 To all who knew him, Brown was described as ""the kindest brother that ever lived."" He was a friend and a supporter of mankind. Brown was always positive and wore a beautiful big smile. According to his wife, he was the strongest man that she has ever known. On Saturday, March 13, 2010, with his beloved family and friends present, Anthony Lamar Brown quietly entered into the presence of his Lord. He leaves behind to morn his lost and celebrate his life his wife of 27 years, Brenda; two daughters, Stephanie (Tony) Ortiz of Dallas, Texas, and Ashley Lauren Brown of Madison; two sons, Anthony Lamarr Brown II and Aaron Lloyd Brown of Madison; three grandchildren, Isaiah Ortiz, Sophia Ortiz and Adeline Smith; two sisters, Sandra (Christopher) Lewis of Fredonia, N.Y., and Joan (Dan) Gray; two brothers, Ernest Raymond Brown Jr. of Minneapolis, Minn., and Dwayne A. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: ""Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.""
