Dr. Sakthivel Prabakaran, age 64 of Madison, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 at home. He was born on January 23rd, 1960 in Virudhunagar, India, the son of Muthu and Rajam Sakthivel. He married Jansirani Chandrabose on October 29th, 1990 in Madurai, India.
He moved with his wife to Madison, WI after completing his PhD in Microbiology and worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 10 years. He then switched careers in 2003 and opened India House, a well-loved Indian grocery store on the west side of Madison. He also founded the Wisconsin Tamil Sangam around that same time and served as its first president. When not too busy working at the store, he loved listening to his favorite Hindu spiritual music, spending time with his wife, daughter, and son, eating South Indian food, bird watching, and driving across the United States to fun destinations. He was a pillar of the Madison community and loved by many through his acts of kindness and service.
He is survived by his wife, Jansirani; son, Prashanth; daughter, Nivedhitha; five brothers (Kumar, Sehar, Karthikeyan, Guhan, and Kiruba) and loving extended family. He is preceded in death by his mother (Rajam) and father (Muthu).
