Dr. Richard Gilliland

Appleton – Dr. Richard L. Gilliland, age 87, passed away with his wife by his side on Friday, July 2, 2021, at his home in Appleton. He was born in Akron, Ohio, on May 26, 1934, the son of Clyde and Agnes (Syverud) Gilliland. While at a very young age, he and his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin. He was a graduate of Madison West High School. He furthered his education by attending St. Olaf College and Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he graduated with honors. He served his country in the U.S. military. He began his career in Wisconsin then moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where he maintained a very successful practice for 33 years before retiring in 1998. He was an active member of the International Chiropractic Association, the Florida Chiropractic Society, and the Pinellas Chiropractic Society. He was on the advisory board for the Anchor Savings Bank of St. Petersburg, a former member of the Lions International, a Rotary member, and a past commodore of the Yachting Rotarian. He was an avid boater and member of the Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club. He was also involved in several charitable organizations.

He was a caring, compassionate man who gave freely of himself, expecting nothing in return. He will be missed by many.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, son, Michael (Bonnie), daughters, Kellie (fiancé Perry Paulson) Pagel; and Erin (Ron) Resop; 2 step-daughters, Heather Turner and Angela Dressback; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Tracy, and a grandson, Dustin.

A funeral service will be held at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at noon. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Avenue / Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.
