Duane William Hopp

MOUNT HOREB -- Duane William Hopp, age 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 10, 2010, with his loving family by his side.  Duane was born on July 6, 1931 in Plymouth, WI, the son of Esther Clara Mayer and William Augusta Hopp.   He graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1949, worked for a year and enrolled at UW-Madison in 1950.  He received a B.A. degree in Journalism in 1955.  He served two years as an officer in the U. S. Army Medical Service Corps.  He was united in marriage on August 18, 1957, to Mary Ann Terhune in Versailles, MO.   The onset of Multiple Sclerosis in 1986 forced an early retirement from UW Extension after 26 years of service, retiring as Professor Emeritus.  He was also a Newsfilm Reporter for WMBD-TV (CBS), Peoria, IL; Sports Editor, The Pekin Times, Pekin, IL; Asst. Editor Caterpillar Folks, Peoria, IL.  Duane received his ""W"" from the UW Athletic Dept. as a coxswain on the crew, and was a Life Member of the National W Club. The two years he spent on the rowing team gave him his first real taste of collegiate sports competition.   While a student at UW-Madison, he worked his way through as a photographer covering events for Madison and Milwaukee newspapers, wire services and national magazines.  He was Photography Editor for both the Daily Cardinal and the Badger yearbook. He was elected President of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalistic society, in his senior year at UW.  A long time member of the Madison Sports Hall of Fame Club, he served as secretary and membership chairman. A Life Member of the Wisconsin News Photographers Assoc., he chaired contest and convention committees and was the first two-time President of the WNPA in the late 60's.  WNPA awarded Duane its highest recognition, The Robert H. Dumke Award for Distinguished Contributions in Visual Communications in 1991.  He was a Life Member of the National Press Photographers Association. Judges voted his photograph 1st place in the NPPA's 1966 Pictures of the Year Portrait/Personality division.  He was named Photographer of the Year in the 1965 American College Public Relations Society, Great Lakes Division. Duane was appointed by the U.S. Olympic Committee as an Official Photographer covering the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, CA, 1972 Summer Olympic Games -- Munich, Germany, and the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, CA.  He has produced over 40 slide-tape productions, 2 30-minute 16mm films, and worked on several film productions in the U.S. and Nicaragua.  He taught several specialty photography seminars for the UW Extension and instituted a high school photography contest sponsored by the WI News Photographers. In his later years, he perfected his woodworking skills while documenting his family's growth through still photography. He accumulated a vast assortment of negatives and prints, the bulk of which was donated to the UW archives. His seven grand-daughters were each given solid oak cedar chests handcrafted by G'Pa.  Duane loved to travel and visited all 50 states as well as traversed Canada from Nova Scotia to British Columbia; Central America, Germany, Belgium and Holland.   Summers were a special time for the family in the school years with some long camping trips to the Rocky Mountains, and the East Coast and Nova Scotia in the camping trailer, which was aptly named, ""Itchy Foot."" Other years Duane saved his vacation time for each summer when he would have quality time with his family camping at Day Lake in Northern Wisconsin. Duane's family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of St. Mary's Hospital, Five Southwest for their caring and compassionate treatment of Duane during his time there. Duane is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughter Lisa (Todd) Hiebing of De Forest; sons, Mark (Lisa) Hopp of Middleton and Eric Hopp of Mount Horeb; daughter, Heather (Dan) Holler of Mount Horeb; granddaughters, Rachael Struble, Kylie Hagen, Natasha Hiebing, Ashley Hopp, Rebecca Hiebing, Kayla Hagen, and Kirstyn Hagen; brother-in-law, David (Betty) Terhune; his nephews and nieces in Wisconsin, Missouri and Mississippi, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther Hopp; sister, Gwendolyn Malanick and brother-in-law, Peter Malanick. A visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 from 4:00  to 7:00 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, Wis. 53705.   Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5701 Raymond Rd., Madison, Wis. 53711.   There will be a visitation prior to service beginning at 9:00 a.m. Memorials in Duanes name may be gifted to University of Wisconsin Crew and National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Wisconsin Chapter, W223 N608 Saratoga Drive, Suite 110, Waukesha, WI 53186-0401.
