Madison - age 85, passed away peacefully at Agrace Hospice Center on Tuesday, April 11.
He was born on May 16, 1931, in Bristol Township, WI, to Emmet and Eva (Karls) Howe. He graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1949. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he married Bonnie Lou Steele on June 16, 1956, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Madison. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He worked as a postal clerk at the main branch of the Madison Post Office until his retirement in 1992. Throughout his adult life, Duane was an avid music collector, gardener, reader, baker, and a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church, where he formerly served as a commentator, CCD Instructor, and pfeffernusse roller. He possessed a quirky, charming, and quick-witted personality that endeared him to his many friends and neighbors, and he will be remembered for his generosity, his sense of humor, and his ability to engage in sincere, meaningful conversation with people of all ages and backgrounds. He is survived by his six children: Cathy (Jim) Doyle, Marge (John) Wagner, Chris (Marcia) Howe, Steve (Kirsti Johanson) Howe, Nick (Joni) Howe, and John (Tonya Rasmussen) Howe; 11 grandchildren: Annalise (Arturo Ramirez) Doyle, Angie Bong (James Doyle's widow), Jason (Jessica) Wagner and Kyle Wagner, Sarah Howe, Olivia (Doug Monroe) Howe, and Joseph Howe, Katie Howe and Rachel (Nick) Neefe, Kyle (Chelsea) Drouin and Cory (Linda) Drouin, and four great grandchildren; his sisters, Eva (Jerry) Clemens, Marilyn Houk, Lola Keller, and Mary Howe; his brothers, Pat Howe and Flip (Patty) Howe; sister-in-law Marge Schulze; sister-in-law and close friend, Marilyn (Dick) Pribbenow; and former coworker and longtime friend, Bruce Meiller. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie Lou; his sister, Lois; his brothers, Hilary "Joe," John "Jack," Jude, Derl, and David; his daughter-in-law, Janean (Brzezinski) Howe; and his firstborn grandson, James Doyle V. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC PARISH AT ST. JAMES CHURCH, 1128 St. James Ct. Madison. Monsignor Thomas Baxter will preside. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Duane will be laid to rest in Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Sun Prairie.
