Dr. Edmund R. Liebl
1926-2022
Edmund R. Liebl, age 95, of Madison, WI died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, April 18th, 2022. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Edmund was born in Sheboygan, WI to Edmund J. and Alma (Agenten) Liebl in 1926 and survived sisters MaryAnna, Gertrude, Charlotte, Helen, and brother Joseph.
He attended Sheboygan North High School where he was a member of the football and tennis teams. He received an appointment to West Point after high school but chose instead to enlist in the U.S. Navy Air Force where he served until the end of WWII. He later served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp.
Ed graduated with honors from The University of Wisconsin Medical school in 1952. He interned at Cleveland City Hospital and at Milwaukee Passavant Hospital for his Surgical residency. He maintained a Family Practice for over 40 years in Madison serving his patients as Surgeon, Internist, and Obstetrician in his office, at the hospitals, nursing homes and at their homes.
As a staff member of three Madison hospitals, he served on numerous boards and committees. He was a member of the Madison Alcohol Commission, Fair Housing Commission and a volunteer physician for migrant workers. Ed was a PTA president and city youth coach.
Even with his busy practice, Ed’s devotion to family was uppermost. He was an avid golfer, tennis player and hiker and shared his love of the outdoors with his family. After retirement, Ed created many happy memories with his family at their family-built lake home in Northern Wisconsin. Ed was a joyful human being whose light shined wherever he went. He made the world a better place and will continue to do so through his family, the plethora of people he brought into the world and cared for, and all who had the good fortune of meeting him.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Patricia (McCann) Liebl; eight children: David (Linda Schuler), Thomas (Anne Reynolds), William (Reva Everhart), Cary (Richard Mueller), Peter (Kathy Buscemi), Perri (Mark Barnes), Mary (Steve Greve), and Ned (Jahpromise Oshianor); 14 grandchildren: Joanna, Ellie, Ryan, Dylan, Nate, Drew, Carli, Jennifer, Peter Ryan, Mallory, Nikki, Jesse, Kara and Bella; 7 great-grandchildren: Toby, Mollie, Nils, Isaac, Estella, Mira, and Marley.
He was very fortunate to receive excellent care during his long illness from St Mary’s Home Health and Hospice Care.
Ed was a longtime supporter of Southern Poverty Law Center and SOS Children’s Villages.
HE WAS A GOOD MAN WHO LED A GOOD LIFE.
