Verona -- Edward ""Gene"" Meverden, age 78, died on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Four Winds Manor in Verona. He was born on December 10, 1931 to Edward and Ann ""Betty"" (Vieau) Meverden in Chicago, Illinois. Gene grew up in Algoma and graduated from Algoma High School. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy. Gene attended the University of Wisconsin -- Green Bay Extension. He worked for the State Department of Transportation, first in Milwaukee, and in 1966 transferred to Madison, where he worked until his retirement. Gene was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. He spent his winters in Yuma, Arizona, where he enjoyed the sun, golfing, and organizing pool parties. Gene is survived by his brothers and sisters, Kenneth Meverden of Sturgeon Bay, Marianne McDermid of Green Bay, Barbara (Roger) Young of Green Bay, Richard (Michelle) Meverden of Neenah, and Janette Meverden of Green Bay; many nieces and nephews; a cousin, Rosemary Van Peymbroeck; special friends, Dave ""Hutch"" Hutchison, Penny Blakeslee, Rob Johnson and John Forbes; and many more friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty (Ed) Annoye; and Mary Lee Meverden and Robert McDermid. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH, 301 N. Main Street, Verona with Fr. William Vernon officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Wednesday. A memorial service will be held in Algoma at a later date.
