Edwin Kubler passed away quietly in his home in Verona on Friday, August 14th. He was 89 years old. A resident of Madison since 1966 Ed was born and raised in Streeter, North Dakota. As a young man Ed was engaged in farming near Streeter with his family. He entered military service in May 1942. During WWII Ed served in the U.S. Army 85th Infantry, Reconnaissance Troop, in North Africa and Italy, receiving a headquarters commendation, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. On November 11, 1945, Ed was honorably discharged from the service at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
After his discharge from the military, Ed enrolled in North Dakota State University at Fargo from which he graduated in 1949 with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Engineering. From 1949 through 1957, Ed was employed as Veterans Agriculture Instructor in Medina, ND, and was a member of the Medina Lions Club, conducting joint activities with the Streeter Lions Club. He joined the American Legion Post No. 265 of Streeter in the late 1940's, and is now a Life member of the Streeter Post.
In June 1952, Ed married Ms. Phyllis June Blackmore of Tappan, ND. Ed and Phyllis raised four sons. After 28 years of marriage, Phyllis died of cancer July 3, 1980. She is buried in Madison, WI.
Ed joined the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as a civil engineer in 1957. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin and retired from the SCS as the State Watershed Engineer in 1985.
Ed is survived by: four sons, Mark (Mary), Dell (Rose), Linn and Charley (Jayne); seven grandchildren, Adam, Hayley, Emily, Ethan, Eva Rose, Jayke and Noah; two sisters, Elizabeth Dockter and Esther (Arnold) Hoffer; and his dear companion Myra Brown of Verona, WI.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents John and Eva, his beloved wife Phyllis, nine sisters, Albina, Paulina, Ida, Bertha, Edna, Frieda, Elsie, Leona and Annetta, one brother Albert, and two siblings in infancy, Jonathon and Annetta.
A visitation will be held TODAY Monday, August 17, 2009 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison from 4 until 7 p.m. There will also be a visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 from 10 until 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will be held at SUNSET MEMORY GARDENS, 7302 Mineral Point Road, Madison on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 12 Noon with military honors.
It is impossible to recognize all the people that a member of our community meets over many, many years who touched his life and whose lives he may have touched. In this brief notice Edwin is humbly remembered as a loving brother, uncle, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and love him.
