Stoughton- Elaine Carol Nelson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 1, 2009. She was born in Dunkirk on February 28, 1933, and was united in marriage to LaVerne Nelson, Sr. in Dubuque, Iowa on October 27, 1951. Elaine raised tobacco and six kids. She participated in the ladies' card club for many years. She also enjoyed painting ceramics, especially for the Stoughton Wrestling Team and Cheerleaders for 1972 to 1982. Her close friends enjoyed calling her ladybird'. Elaine was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and First Lutheran Church. She worked for many years at One Hour Martinizing and at Nazareth House. Elaine enjoyed RV-ing with her husband after his retirement. They spent winters in the Southwest. Elaine liked to test her luck at the casinos in Laughlin and Las Vegas, but spending time with her family brought Elaine her greatest joy. She is survived by her husband LaVerne, her six children, LaVerne (Vickie) Nelson, Jr., Larry (Trudy) Nelson, Jayne (Bull) Mallon, Janis (Don) Bates, John Nelson and Tom (Jennie) Nelson; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Donald Doc' (Millie) Vike and Herbert Herbie' (Nancy) Vike of Santa Barbara, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Eda Vike; her brother, Nels Vike, Sr.; and her sister, Marcella Sis' Henney. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 11am at First Lutheran Church, 310 E. Washington St., Stoughton with the Rev. Richard Halom officiating. Burial will follow at Cooksville Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton on Sunday, January 4th from 2pm until 6pm, and again at church on Monday from 10am until the time of service. A special thanks to Care Wisconsin, Hospice, Pastor Richard Halom, and the many care providers who provided such excellent care, compassion and love. A very special thanks to Elaine's #1 caretaker, our dad, her husband of 57 years, Worm', who dedicated many years filled with love to ensure the best care possible.
